Joel G. Woodson,
Director of Bands
Joel Woodson received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Temple University’s Boyer College of Music in 1993 and his Master of Music degree from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music in 1996. Mr. Woodson assumed the position of “Director of Bands” of Williamsburg Middle School, starting in august of 2011. Williamsburg Bands have grown tremendously in size and performance level in a short time. Mr. Woodson added a jazz program and created the WMS Chamber Winds to increase the width and breadth of the band program. Mr. Woodson spent the 2010/ 2011 school year as the Head Band Director at Fulmore Middle School, a Humanities and Law Magnet school in Austin, Texas. While at Fulmore, the bands achieved numerous successes, including “Best in Class” honors and “Superior” ratings for all competing ensembles. He also served as the chair of Fulmore’s Fine Arts Department.
Before his tenure at Fulmore Middle School, Mr. Woodson spent 7 years as the Director of Bands at Kenmore Middle School, an Arts and Communications Technology Focus school in Arlington, Virginia. Under Mr. Woodson’s direction, Kenmore Middle School Bands received numerous Superior ratings and 1st Place Honors at competitions within the county, district, and state. He established Kenmore’s Big Kickin’ Band and led that sought-after jazz band in performance at many high-profile community events including a Kennedy Center Millennium Stage performance during Music In Our Schools Month 2008.
Mr. Woodson’s professional affiliations include the Music Educators National Conference (MENC: The National Association for Music Educators), the Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA) and the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association (VBODA).
