Accolades and Accomplishments!

2018/2019

-The WMS Wind Ensemble and Percussion 78 earned a rating of “straight superiors” at the 2019 District XII Middle School Band Assessment. A “straight superiors” rating means that the ensemble received a superior rating(the highest one can receive) from all 4 judges. The Wind Ensemble was one of only 5 District XII(Arlington and Fairfax) Middle School Band programs to receive a straight superior rating, this year.
-As result of a very intense and competitive audition process, 7 WMS band students successfully earned a spot in the 2019 District XII All District Jr. Band,with an additional student chosen as an alternate. WMS Bands has the highest representation in the 2019 All District Bands of any APS middle school.
– 12 of our 6th grade band students were successful and chosen to be members of the 2019 APS Jr. Honors Band. WMS Bands has the highest representation of any APS school in the 2019 APS Jr. Honors Band.
A Record High 32 of our 7th/8th grade band students successfully auditioned and were chosen to be members of the 2019 APS Honors Band. For the 8th year in a row, WMS Bands has the highest representation of any APS school in the APS Honors Band.

 

2017/20178

Our Wind Ensemble won 1st place in their division and received a Superior rating and the Grand Champion trophy by earning the highest rating(98.5 out of 100, a new record high for us) of any band at our competition.
Our Concert Band won 1st place in their division and earned a Superior rating.
Our Symphonic Band earned 3rd place in their division and received an Excellent rating.
24 of our band members prepared and performed at the annual District XII Solo and Ensemble Festival with All receiving a Superior Rating.

-After a very rigorous and competitive audition process, 7 WMS band students successfully earned a spot in the 2018 District XII All District Jr. Band. This is a new record for our band program!!!  WMS Bands has the highest representation in the 2018 All District Bands of any APS middle or high school.
15(A record high for us) of our 6th graders auditioned for the 2018 APS Jr. Honors Band. All 15 of our 6th grade band students were successful and chosen to be members of the 2018 APS Jr. Honors Band. WMS Bands has the highest representation of any APS school in the  2018 APS Jr. Honors Band.
23 of our 7th/8th grade band students successfully auditioned and were chosen to be members of the 2018 APS Honors Band. For the 7th year in a row, WMS Bands has the highest representation of any APS school in the APS Honors Band.

2016/2017

-Our Wind Ensemble won 1st place in their division and received a Superior rating and the Grand Champion trophy by earning the highest rating of any band at our annual Music Department Spring Trip Competition. 2 Wind Ensemble students won outstanding achievement soloist awards. Our Wind Ensemble Low Brass section won an outstanding section achievement award. Our Concert Band won 1st place in their division and earned an “Excellent” rating. Our Symphonic Band earned 2nd place in their division and received a “Superior” rating.

-22 of our band members prepared and performed at the annual District XII Solo and Ensemble Festival with All receiving a Superior Rating.

A “straight superiors” rating means that the ensemble received a superior rating(the highest one can receive) from all 4 judges. The Wind Ensemble and Percussion 78 was the only APS Middle School Band to receive an overall superior rating, this year.

-As a result of success through a very rigorous audition process, WMS band students(6) have the highest representation of any APS Middle School in the very selective and elite All District Jr. Honor Band(VBODA, District XII). 

-Through our support and recruitment efforts in our YHS/WMS cohort, 90 new 6th graders became new members of the WMS Bands at the start of this year!

13 of our 6th grade band students successfully auditioned and are members of the 2017 APS Jr. Honors Band. 

23 of our 7th/8th grade band students successfully auditioned and are members of the 2017 APS Honors Band.

-WMS band students have the highest representation of any APS school in the the 2017 APS Jr. Honors and Honors Bands.

2015/2016

-Launch of the YHS/ WMS mentor/mentee program

-Created and formalized YHS pyramid cohort(YHS,WMS and WMS elementary schools) for the purposes of ensuring smooth learning transitions for our students between school levels and a welcome environment for all.

-60 6th graders became new members of the WMS Bands.

-9 6th graders successfully auditioned and became members of the APS Jr. Honors Band(the highest number of students from any school in APS).

-22 7th/8th graders successfully auditioned and became members of the APS Honors Band(the highest number of students from any school in APS).

-We continued our membership in the very selective and elite All District Jr. Honor, through a successful audition.

-18 of our band members prepared and performed at the annual District XII Solo and Ensemble festival with all receiving a Superior rating.

-Our Wind Ensemble took 1st place, received a Superior rating and the Grand Champion trophy by earning the highest rating of any band at our annual Music Department Spring Trip Competition.

2014/2015

-Launch of the WMS Friday Morning Music Club

-10 6th graders successfully auditioned and became members of the APS Jr. Honors Band(the highest number of students from any school in APS).

-17 7th/8th graders successfully auditioned and became members of the APS Honors Band(the highest number of students from any school in APS).

-We continued our membership in the very selective and elite All District Jr. Honor, through a successful audition.

-16 of our band members prepared and performed at the annual District XII Solo and Ensemble festival with most receiving a Superior rating.

-Our Wind Ensemble took 1st place and received a Superior rating at our annual Music Department Spring Trip Competition.
