Class Supplies

(All students will need BY THE 2ND WEEK OF SCHOOL)

All Band Students

  • 2 sharpened pencils (daily)
  • A white 1-inch 3-ring view binder
  • A metronome/tuner(for home and school use)
  • A music stand (for home practice)

Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band Only

  • Foundations for Superior Performance by Richard Williams and Jeff King

All Percussionists

  • Practice kit including 8 inch pad, bells and stand.  We recommend a rolling case, if possible.
    • 6th grade percussionists are required to have access to a Practice Kit at school for daily use and at home for daily practice. 
    • 7th & 8th percussionists are required to have access to a Practice Kit at only home for daily practice. 
  • One Stick/Mallet bag(Vic Firth SBAG2 or Sabian 61143 is recommended)
  • Snare Drum Sticks, one pair(Vic Firth SD1 generals are strongly recommended)
  • Bell/Xylophone mallets, one pair(Malletech OR39R or Mike Balter 10R are strongly recommended)

7th & 8th Grade Percussionists Only

  • Timpani Mallets(two pair), the below models are strongly recommended
    • Promark Jonathan Hass Staccato, one pair
    • and
    • Promark JH4 Jonathan Haas General Timpani Mallets, one pair

  • Marimba Mallets(two pair), the below models are strongly recommended

Recommended Instrument List

Please do not misunderstand us. No student will be denied the opportunity to participate in the band program at Williamsburg based on the quality or brand of their instrument. We do believe however that his or her success will be greatly improved if each student uses a good quality recommended instrument.

Flute

• Recommended models –  We strongly recommend an open-holed flute with plug fillers. YHS Pyramid Flute/Piccolo recommendations

• A tuning/cleaning rod

• A bandanna and a cloth baby diaper for cleaning

Double Reeds(Oboe/Bassoon)

• Students may rent school-owned instruments or we recommend buying a quality, used professional instrument.

• YHS Pyramid Double Reed recommendations

• 5 medium strength reeds (reeds will wear out and need to be replaced periodically)

• a silk swab

• cork grease

Clarinet

• Recommended models – We strongly recommend an all wood clarinet. YHS Pyramid Clarinet and Mouthpiece recommendations.

Please also purchase a mouthpiece cap.

• 5 (or more) Vandoren strength 2 ½ reeds. Reeds will wear out and need to be replaced periodically. As the clarinetist develops they will also need a harder strength reed.

• A cotton or silk pull-through swab (not felt).

• Other cleaning supplies – mouthpiece brush, polishing cloth & cork grease.

• A 4 reed capacity “Reed Guard”.

Alto Saxophone

• Recommended models – YHS Pyramid Saxophone and Mouthpiece recommendations.

• Mouthpiece – Selmer C-star or Vandoren Optimum Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece, AL3 Please get one of these specific mouthpieces for your instrument, as other mouthpieces can be difficult for a beginner to play on. Please also purchase a mouthpiece cap.

• 5 (no more) Vandoren strength 2 ½ reeds. Reeds will wear out and need to be replaced periodically.

• A cotton or silk pull-through swab (not felt).

• Other cleaning supplies – mouthpiece brush, polishing cloth & cork grease.

• A 4 reed capacity “Reed Guard”.

Tenor Saxophone

• Recommended models –YHS Pyramid Saxophone and Mouthpiece recommendations.

• Mouthpiece – Selmer C-star or Vandoren V5 Classic Series Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece, T25 Please get one of these specific mouthpieces for your instrument, as other mouthpieces can be difficult for a beginner to play on. Please also purchase a mouthpiece cap.

• 5 (no more) Vandoren strength 2 ½ reeds. Reeds will wear out and need to be replaced periodically.

• A cotton or silk pull-through swab (not felt).

• Other cleaning supplies – mouthpiece brush, polishing cloth & cork grease.

• A 4 reed capacity “Reed Guard”.

Trumpet

• Recommended brands/models – YHS Pyramid Trumpet and Mouthpiece recommendations

• Please also purchase a “Berp” for your trumpet.

• Supplies – Valve oil (Blue juice or Al Cass), mouthpiece brush, snake brush, tuning slide grease, polishing cloth.

Horn

• Students may rent school-owned instruments or purchase one of the following recommendations. YHS Pyramid French Horn and Mouthpiece recommendations.

Please also purchase a “Berp” for your horn.

  • Supplies – rotary oil, mouthpiece brush, snake brush, tuning slide grease, polishing cloth.

Trombone

• Recommended brands/models – YHS Pyramid Trombone and Mouthpiece recommendations.

Please also purchase a “Berp” for your trombone.

• Supplies – Super slick slide cream, small water spray bottle, mouthpiece brush, snake brush, tuning slide grease, polishing cloth.

Euphonium

• Students may rent school-owned instruments. YHS Pyramid Euphonium and Mouthpiece recommendations.

. Please also purchase a “Berp” for your euphonium.

• Supplies – Valve oil (Blue juice), mouthpiece brush, snake brush, tuning slide grease, polishing cloth, small bath towel.

Tuba

• Students may rent school-owned instruments. YHS Pyramid Tuba and Mouthpiece recommendations.

• Please also purchase a “Berp” for your tuba.

• Supplies – Rotary valve oil(if applicable), valve oil (Blue juice or Al Cass), mouthpiece brush, snake brush, tuning slide grease, polishing cloth.
